Tottenham Hotspur Football Club, commonly referred to as Spurs, is an English professional football club in Tottenham, London, that competes in the Premier League. Tottenham Hotspur Stadium has been the home of Spurs since 2019, replacing their former home of White Hart Lane. The club's motto is Audere est Facere (To Dare Is to Do).
Spurs have a long-standing rivalry with nearby club Arsenal, with head-to-head meetings known as the North London derby. Founded in 1882, Tottenham won the FA Cup for the first time in 1901, making them the only non-League club to do so since the formation of the Football League in 1888. Tottenham were the first British club to win a European trophy, when they became champions of the UEFA Cup in 1972. They have collected a total of eight trophies in their history.
Tottenham were relegated to the Second Division in the 1953–54 season, their first season in the second tier of English football since 1934. In 1960–61, they became the first team to complete The Double in the 20th century. Tottenham won the FA Cup for a third time in 1967, beating Chelsea in the final. They were runners-up of the European Cup in 1962 and 1983, and reached the semi-finals in 1963, 1974 and 1982. They reached the final of the UEFA Cup in 1984, becoming the first British club to do so. In the 1990s, Spurs won the FA Cup on two occasions (1991 and 1999) and the League Cup in 1999. They closed out the decade by winning the UEFA Cup in 1984. The early 2000s saw Spurs win the League Cup twice (2008 and 2009), the FA Cup (2007) and the UEFA Cup (1972). Spurs also reached the semi-finals of the Champions League in 2010–11. The club's fortunes declined sharply in the second half of the 1990s and early 2000s, culminating in their relegation in the 2002–03 season. They regained their Premier League status in the following season and have remained in the top flight ever since.
In the 2018–19 season, Spurs finished fourth in the Premier League, qualifying for the UEFA Champions League for a fourth consecutive season. They reached the final of the UEFA Champions League for the first time in their history, losing 2–0 to Liverpool.
Spurs are a young club with a promising future. They have a strong core of young players and a manager in Mauricio Pochettino who is committed to developing them. The club is well-positioned to take advantage of the new stadium and the increased revenue it will generate.
