Bournemouth football club was founded in 1899 by a group of schoolboys. The club played its first ever game against Boscombe St. John's school and won 3-1. Bournemouth joined the Hampshire League in 1900 and won the league title in their first season. The club then went on to win the Southern League title in 1923. In 1972, the club was elected to the Football League and has played in the second and third tiers of English football ever since. Bournemouth achieved promotion to the Premier League for the first time in 2015.
