Manchester United is an English football club based in Old Trafford, Greater Manchester. The club was formed in 1878 as Newton Heath LYR Football Club by the Carriage and Wagon department of the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway depot in Newton Heath. The club split from the railway company in 1892 and remained as Newton Heath until 1902, when they adopted their current name. Manchester United has played in the top division of English football a record 20 times, and has won the Premier League a record 13 times. The club has also won the FA Cup 12 times, the League Cup five times, the UEFA Champions League three times, the UEFA Europa League once, the FIFA Club World Cup once, and the Intercontinental Cup once.
Manchester United was a founding member of the now-defunct G-14 group of Europe's leading football clubs and held a stake in the group until 2013. The club is the most valuable in the world, worth $3.2 billion, and is the world's most valuable football brand. Forbes magazine ranked Manchester United as the second most valuable sports team in the world in 2017, behind only the NFL's Dallas Cowboys. The club is also ranked as the fifth most valuable football club in the world by Deloitte. Manchester United has historical rivalries with Liverpool, Arsenal, and Leeds United.
The club's home ground is Old Trafford, a stadium that was originally designed to host the 1908 Summer Olympics. The club has played at the ground since 1902, and moved there permanently in 1910. Old Trafford has been the club's home ground for all but four of their Premier League history, and hosted matches at the 1966 FIFA World Cup and Euro 96. The ground underwent several expansions in the 1990s and 2000s, including the addition of a second tier to the Main Stand in 1994 and the expansion of the Sir Alex Ferguson Stand and the South Stand in 2006. The stadium's current capacity is 74,879, making it the largest club football stadium in the United Kingdom and the eleventh-largest in Europe. The club's training ground, Carrington Training Centre, is located 10 miles (16 km) to the west of the city centre.
Manchester United also operate a women's football team, Manchester United Women, and a men's futsal team. The club also has a number of academy teams, with the most notable being the Manchester United Academy team that plays in the Premier Academy League.
